Artist Statement

Found objects communicate something primitive to me that can’t be captured in language. Understanding and uncovering this communication is the departure for my work. I sometimes think of myself as an archaeologist revealing the hidden layers. Although common objects might not seem important, they have emotional and communicative presence. Even the simplest objects have symbolic meaning that embody and memorialize relationships. The meanings and memories aren’t premeditated; I try not to force meaning into the objects. The object speaks to me in a subconscious way that resembles reliquaries—a structure pointing to something sacred beyond itself. I’m especially drawn to opposites. Like life, objects are ambiguous and contradictory: beautiful and destructive, delicate and violent.
